Saina Nehwal revealed on the House of Glory podcast that she is dealing with arthritis in her knees. Speaking to the host, Saina shared, "My knee isn't in great shape. I have arthritis, and my cartilage has deteriorated significantly. It's becoming increasingly difficult to train for eight or nine hours a day." The gold medalist also mentioned that training for her usual hours is becoming more challenging, leading her to contemplate that her career may be nearing its end.
Saina Nehwal hinted at her possible resignation, stating that two hours of training is insufficient to compete with the world's best players, and she needs to come to terms with that reality. This brings our attention to how arthritis is increasing in young athletes.
We got in touch with Dr Akhilesh Yadav, Associate Director- Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement, Max Hospital Vaishali who shares how arthritis, a disease often associated with elderly persons, is increasingly affecting young athletes.
What Is Arthritis?
A variety of diseases that inflame the joints can be grouped together under the general term "arthritis." Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) are the most prevalent types. Dr Akhilesh explains that rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease that can strike at any age and cause persistent joint inflammation, whereas osteoarthritis is frequently associated with ageing and is caused by cartilage degradation.
Growing Concern Among Youth Sports Participants
Though recent cases have shown its growing influence, arthritis was not previously thought to be a big worry for young athletes, Dr Akhilesh shares. “Early onset of arthritis can be attributed to high-intensity sports, strict training programs, and frequent physical stress. The illness is a major obstacle for sportsmen like Saina Nehwal, who have devoted their entire lives to their sport,” he said.
Young Athletes' Experiences with Arthritis
Dr Akhilesh shares that young athletes who have arthritis may experience the following:
1. Pain and Unease
In those with affected joints, arthritis can result in chronic pain, stiffness, and swelling. This discomfort can significantly impair an athlete's ability to perform. It may restrict the range of motion, which makes it challenging to perform the exact motions needed in badminton and other sports. Because of the discomfort, training frequency and intensity are frequently decreased, which has an adverse effect on overall performance and skill development.
2. Impact on training and recovery
It's common for athletes with arthritis to need to modify their training plans. This can entail less intense training, altered workouts, and a stronger emphasis on recovery. “As controlling arthritis requires striking a balance between pushing limits and avoiding overexertion, the healing process may also take longer. An athlete's training cycle may be disturbed during this transition time, which could impact their performance,” Dr Akhilesh said.
3. Diminished Range of Motion
An athlete's range of motion can be seriously impacted by joint stiffness and inflammation. “Anything that restricts an athlete's range of motion might have an impact on their ability to compete successfully in sports like badminton, which need quick reflexes and agility. Athletes who have limited mobility may adjust their motions to compensate for the pain, which puts more load on other body parts and raises the chance of injury,” Dr Akhilesh said.
4. Stress on the Mind and Emotions
There can be a major psychological and emotional burden associated with managing a chronic illness like arthritis. The possibility of an early retirement owing to a crippling illness might cause young sportsmen to experience depressive, hopeless, and even angry thoughts. These emotional difficulties may be made worse by physical restrictions and performance-related pressure.
5. Long-Term Effects on Career
Arthritis can have a significant long-term effect on a young athlete's career. An athlete's career may be cut short and their chances of success may be restricted by early-onset arthritis. It also calls for a change in professional focus, since treating the illness can require moving to less physically taxing positions in the sports business, such as coaching or sports administration, Dr Akhilesh shares.
Tips To Handle Arthritis In Young Athletes
Dr Akhilesh shares effective tips to handle arthritis in young athletes:
1. Early Identification and Management- For arthritis to be effectively managed, early diagnosis is essential. Frequent examinations and consultations with medical specialists can aid in early diagnosis and the implementation of suitable treatment plans. A combination of lifestyle modifications, physical therapy, and medications is essential for controlling symptoms and halting future joint damage.
2. Changes in Lifestyle- Maintaining good health can help maintain joint health. This includes eating a balanced diet and getting enough sleep. Maintaining a healthy weight is also essential because being overweight puts more strain on the joints. Reducing inflammation and enhancing joint function can be achieved by including anti-inflammatory foods and supplements.
3. Support for Mental Health- It's critical to address the psychological and emotional effects of having arthritis. Peer support, counselling, and mental health specialists can all assist athletes in managing the psychological difficulties that come with their illness. Resilience and drive can also be significantly impacted by support from family, friends, and coaches.
