Maintaining good intimate health goes far beyond simply practising safe intimacy. It involves more than the absence of disease or dysfunction and encompasses your physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being. Factors like stress, relationship issues, or a lack of emotional connection can impact your experience with your partner. However, there are ways to nurture your intimate health, which plays a key role in your overall well-being.
A fulfilling intimate life can improve your overall health and may even lower your risk of certain health conditions. However, it’s essential to understand how to properly care for your intimate health.
Reasons why you might not be enjoying intimacy with your partner
Stress
Constant stress, anxiety, or depression can negatively impact your desire for intimacy and your physical and mental well-being, contributing to low libido and making it harder to initiate intimacy. “Prioritise mental health by managing stress through relaxation techniques like meditation, as stress can negatively impact performance and desire,” said Dr Chetna Jain, Director, Dept of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Gurugram.
Relationship issues and lack of emotional connection
A lack of emotional connection, communication, and clear expectations in your relationship can make you feel disconnected from your partner and less interested in intimacy. Problems like incompatible work schedules, or individual preferences can also have an impact.
“Start by discussing intimacy and other personal topics with your spouse openly and honestly. Don't let obligations to your family, your job, or difficult circumstances keep you from talking to someone about your intimate health problems,” said Dr Archana Dhawan Bajaj, Gynecologist, Obstetrician and IVF Expert, Nurture IVF Clinic, New Delhi.
She further said that you may identify the root of any intimacy issues you may be having and come to a mutually beneficial agreement on a solution when you communicate with your spouse calmly and politely.
Sexual dysfunction
“See your doctor if you find that you're not enjoying intimacy. Low desire and sexual dysfunction can be caused by certain medical disorders,” said Dr Archana.
Dr Chetna added that adequate sleep and avoiding excessive alcohol or tobacco use are crucial, as these can impair sexual function.

Regular Check-ups: Schedule regular visits to your gynaecologist. Annual pelvic exams and Pap smears help detect any potential issues early, including infections or abnormalities.
Safe Intimacy Practices: Always use protection during intimate activity. Condoms are essential to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs). If you're in a long-term relationship, ensure both partners are tested for STIs regularly.
Vaccinations: Get vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV) and Hepatitis B, both of which are linked to serious health problems. These vaccines are highly effective and can prevent certain types of cancer.
Hygiene: Maintain proper genital hygiene. Wash with water and mild soap, avoid douching, and wear breathable cotton underwear to prevent infections.
Healthy Lifestyle: A balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are essential for maintaining intimate health. These habits improve energy levels, hormonal balance, and overall mood.
By following these simple steps, you can ensure your intimate health remains strong and vibrant.
“Your intimate health is a vital part of your overall well-being—nurture it with care, respect, and knowledge,” concluded Dr Shobha Gupta.
