Doctors were left stunned by bizarre case of a young boy in Bengaluru who cried ‘tears of blood’. According to news reports, the youngster leaked rivulets of blood out of his eyes often exacerbated by going to the loo. The case, published in the journal BMJ Case Reports, talks about a boy in his early teens visiting various doctors after blood began oozing from his right eye and right nostril. Even though the tears were painless, they increased progressively.
"There was no history of recent trauma, bleeding from any other mucosal surfaces, or psychiatric illness," the doctors wrote in the journal.
Initial tests were inconclusive
According to the report, his tests were inconclusive and did not show any notable abnormalities. Apart from perfect eyesight, doctors said the boy’s tear drainage system was also free flowing and there were no hemorrhages as well.
However, his condition was aggravated by peeing.
When carefully examined, the teenager’s lower eyelid showed evidence of maceration – a condition in which the skin breaks down due to repeated exposure to moisture, and bleeding. "The patient was asked to pass urine and frank bleeding was noted from the right eye," doctors said.
The diagnosis of arteriovenous malformation Doctors said after carefully examining it was revealed that he suffered from malformed blood vessels consistent with a vascular malformation – which led to a diagnosis of conjunctival micro arteriovenous malformation or AVMs.
AVM is a rare congenital vascular anomaly that causes symptoms like tearing, blurred vision, and throbbing pain. This condition is a vascular anomaly that can occur anywhere in the body, including the brain, face, and neck. According to experts, AVMs are characterized by tangles of poorly formed blood vessels that connect arteries directly to veins, bypassing the capillary system. This can cause the surrounding tissue to not receive enough oxygen.
Signs and symptoms of AVMs
Apart from bleeding in the eye, a few other symptoms of AVMs include:
Red skin discolouration
High temperatures
Frequent fever
Electric sensation
Pulsing
Continuous bleeding
Doctors say AVMs in the brain or spinal cord can cause issues with speech, sitting, walking, and sensations.
Treatment of AVMs
According to the journal, the boy underwent endovascular embolization - a procedure that fills or closes blood vessels to prevent bleeding or rupturing, successfully treating his condition. Doctors said the boy experienced only mild pain and swelling to his eyelid following his operation.
When medics checked in two weeks post-op, the boy had experienced no more bloody tear episodes and there was only some minor scarring at the site of the procedure.
