Monsoon is often considered a pleasant season but it sets the stage for allergies and infections, especially during menstruation. It is essential to adhere to good menstrual hygiene practices as damp clothes, moisture in the atmosphere, and the moisture from menstrual pads make a woman prone to distressing infections. Hence, it becomes more essential for women to take measures to maintain hygiene during the monsoon. We got in touch with Dr Anuja Thomas, Consultant - Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospital, Kharghar, Mumbai who shares tips to maintain period hygiene during the rainy season.
Change the sanitary napkins, tampons, and menstrual cups every 3-4 hours:
Dr Anuja Thomas explains during the monsoon, pay extra attention to menstrual hygiene to keep infections at bay. Change sanitary napkins or tampons frequently, as the humidity can promote bacteria that can further cause allergies and infections. One should wash hands after changing and curb the spread of germs. Choose the right product that works for you and take the doctor’s help, if required. Using the wrong products can make one uncomfortable.
Keep the vaginal area clean and dry:
Dr Anuja Thomas shares it is essential to avoid using scented feminine hygiene products that may cause irritation or disrupt the pH balance of your vagina. One should keep it clean, and dry and use products only after consulting the doctor. Stay hydrated and eat a well-balanced diet as well. Try to eat fresh fruits and vegetables and avoid foods that irritate you down there such as onions, spicy food, alcohol, smoking, and garlic. Douching is a strict no-no and can invite an infection down there.
Wear cotton undergarments:
Dr Anuja Thomas explains it will be imperative for women to avoid wearing tight nylon clothes. Instead, go for breathable cotton clothes that help with proper circulation and prevent odour.
Don’t shave down there:
It is better to avoid shaving as the area down there remains moist and wet during monsoon and is an ideal environment for the bacteria to grow and multiply causing an infection, she said. In case you have sensitive skin down there then be extra careful and seek an expert’s help regarding the products that are suitable for your skin type.
Shower twice a day:
The humidity during the rainy season will cause excessive sweat and odour down there. It is better to shower at least twice a day and use unscented soaps or body washes as recommended by the expert.
