Dengue Cases Spike Across The Country
Dengue Cases in India: Dengue cases are increasing in several cities across the country. Karnataka and Kerala have seen a major spike in dengue cases amid the ongoing monsoon season. Kerala has reported an increase in dengue and leptospirosis cases. Reports say that the state has had around 202 fatalities in 2024 so far. In July, there were 202,122 cases of fever, 2,250 cases of dengue and 1,850 cases of mumps among others.
Karnataka on the other hand has reported more than 10,000 cases of dengue. This also includes eight fatal cases that have been reported so far. According to a report in Business Standard, there has also been a significant increase in influenza cases in Delhi, Rajasthan and Gujarat. More than 1,000 swine flu cases have apparently been documented in Rajasthan thus far, while leptospirosis and brucellosis infections are also expected to peak in 2024.
There has been a surge in dengue cases in at least five districts in southern West Bengal. Each of these districts has reported more than 100 vector-borne infections till July 20, an official source said.
North 24 Parganas with 268 dengue cases topped the list of districts. Other districts in south Bengal where the number of dengue cases is high are Murshidabad district (224) Hooghly (181) and Calcutta (152).
He said Malda district in north Bengal has also reported around 230 cases. Speaking to PTI, a senior official of the state health department said, “The dengue situation in West Bengal is not alarming. This disease has a seasonal pattern that shows an increasing trend with the onset of monsoon and peaks after the season. This year the number of dengue cases is comparatively low.”
Two new cases were reported in Gurugram and the total count of dengue patients this season has now increased to 17.
Dengue is a mosquito-borne infection that is common in tropical and subtropical climates. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), about half of the world’s population is now at risk of dengue with an estimated 100–400 million infections occurring each year.
