Cranberry juice is widely consumed due to its delicious taste but did you know it is one of the most effective drinks to treat urinary tract infections (UTI)? A recent study has found that drinking cranberry juice or taking cranberry pills can prevent UTIs, especially in women who are at risk for these infections. According to a new study by scientists from Bond University, the University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital cranberries in liquid form provide better clinical outcomes in terms of reduction in UTIs.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) impact 50-60 per cent of women at some stage in their lives. These infections can cause significant discomfort, marked by an intense urge to urinate, burning sensations, and urine that appears cloudy or reddish with a strong odour. “Over 50 per cent of females and 20 per cent of males suffer from at least one episode throughout their lifetime, and in children, this is the most common bacterial infection,” said lead author Dr Christian Moro and colleagues.
“Although antimicrobials have traditionally achieved high immediate cure rates, the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria causing UTIs is increasing. Some studies have reported that over 90 per cent of UTIs involve bacteria resistant to two or more antibiotics,” he said.
As per Dr Moro with microbial resistance reducing the effectiveness of antibiotics in treating UTIs, it is crucial to identify evidence-based non-drug interventions for their prevention and treatment. Reducing antibiotic use can also alleviate the financial and clinical burdens associated with prescriptions, as UTIs account for many clinical visits.
“Increasing fluid intake or introducing cranberry juice or supplements has been proposed as having potential benefits.” The authors also found cranberry juice reduced the need for antibiotics by 59 per cent, and significantly reduced the symptoms of those with a current UTI. “Just drinking more water or taking cranberry tablets was also beneficial, although not to the extent of combining cranberry with fluid, such as in juice,” they said.
Here are some other health benefits of consuming cranberry juice:
Rich in Antioxidants
Cranberries are packed with antioxidants, including flavonoids and vitamin C, which help combat oxidative stress and reduce inflammation. Antioxidants protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, potentially lowering the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer.
Heart Health
Regular consumption of cranberry juice may contribute to better heart health. The antioxidants in cranberries can help reduce blood pressure, lower bad cholesterol (LDL), and increase good cholesterol (HDL). These effects support cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Improved Digestion
Cranberry juice contains dietary fibre, which aids in digestion and helps maintain a healthy digestive system. The juice also promotes the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, supporting overall gut health and preventing digestive issues like constipation.
Immune System Support
Cranberry juice is rich in vitamin C, an essential nutrient that boosts the immune system. Regular consumption can help enhance the body's defence against infections and illnesses by promoting the production of white blood cells.
Oral Health
The antibacterial properties of cranberries can benefit oral health by preventing bacteria from sticking to teeth and gums. This can help reduce the risk of cavities, gum disease, and plaque buildup.
Weight Management
Cranberry juice is low in calories and fat, making it a healthy addition to a weight management plan. Its natural sweetness can satisfy sugar cravings without adding excessive calories, and the fibre content helps you feel full longer.
Skin Health
The vitamins and antioxidants in cranberry juice can promote healthy skin by protecting it from damage caused by environmental factors. Regular consumption can help maintain a youthful complexion, reduce signs of ageing, and improve overall skin health.
Kidney Stone Prevention
While cranberries contain oxalates, which can contribute to kidney stone formation in some individuals, they also have compounds that can help prevent certain types of kidney stones. Those prone to kidney stones need to consult a healthcare provider before increasing cranberry juice intake.
