Dr Munia Bhattacharya shares that common mental health problems include:
1. Depression
- Symptoms include weariness, despondency, changes in eating and sleep patterns, loss of interest in activities, and persistent sorrow.
- Impact: Affects relationships, day-to-day activities, and general quality of life.
2. Bipolar Disorder
- Symptoms include depressive and manic periods that alternate (higher mood, more activity).
- Impact: Has an effect on behaviour, mood, energy levels, and the capacity to complete daily duties.
3. Disorders of Anxiety
- Symptoms include excessive anxiety, agitation, exhaustion, trouble focusing, tense muscles, and irregular sleep patterns.
- Impact: May seriously distress people and disrupt everyday routines.
4. OCD, or obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Symptoms include compulsive activities and recurrent, unwelcome thoughts, or obsessions and compulsions.
- Impact: May cause distress and major disruptions to day-to-day activities.
5. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Symptoms may include nightmares, flashbacks, extreme anxiety, and uncontrollably recurring thoughts about the terrible event.
- Impact: This may cause long-term psychological distress as well as disturbances to daily life.
Preventive Measures to Maintain Brain Function and Health
Dr Munia Bhattacharya explains for general wellbeing, the brain must be kept in good working order. Here are some measures that may help maintain the health of your brain:
1. Well-Rounded Diet
Eat a diet high in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and healthy fats. Antioxidants, vitamins B and D, and omega-3 fatty acids are examples of essential nutrients that enhance overall health and brain function.
2. Frequent Exercise
On most days of the week, spend at least 30 minutes exercising moderately. Exercises that raise endorphin levels, like yoga, jogging, walking, or swimming, can elevate mood, lessen anxiety, and enhance sleep quality.
3. Sufficient Sleep
Aim for seven to nine hours of good sleep every night. A regular sleep schedule and a comfortable atmosphere can improve memory consolidation, emotional control, and cognitive performance.
4. Mental Stimulation
Take up tasks like reading, solving puzzles, or picking up a new skill. Neuroplasticity, which aids in the brain's ability to adapt and build new connections, is encouraged by mental stimulation.
5. Stress Management
Make use of calming methods including mindfulness, meditation, and deep breathing. Stress harms the brain and general health, but it can be lessened by regularly partaking in enjoyable and calming activities.
6. Social Relations
Participate in group activities and keep in regular contact with family and friends. Good social connections can boost mood and cognitive performance by lowering stress and feelings of loneliness.
7. Objectives and Goals
Establish achievable, practical goals that will make you feel fulfilled and have a purpose. Establishing objectives and a sense of purpose can boost motivation and a sense of accomplishment, which improves general well-being.
8. Rejecting Dangerous Substance Use
