Do You Have Frequent Panic Attacks, Painful Muscle Cramps? Expert Warns Could Be Due to Severe Deficiency of THIS Nutrient
Low magnesium levels disrupt nervous system function and lead to increased anxiety and irritability
Why do some people, when they take vitamin D hallucinate or even have a panic attack? “This is not a vitamin D toxicity problem,” informs Dr. Eric Berg, a US-based healthcare expert. However, if you have a slight magnesium deficiency and take more vitamin D, “you can end up with a major magnesium deficiency,” he said on his Instagram channel.
Why does magnesium deficiency cause mental and physical health issues?
Dr. Berg says low magnesium levels disrupt nervous system function and lead to increased anxiety and irritability, which can manifest as panic attacks in susceptible individuals.
Also known as hypomagnesaemia, symptoms of low magnesium in your body include muscle cramps, high blood pressure and many other mental health conditions. Doctors say it is also often hard to detect until levels become very low.
Dr. Berg says those who have diabetes, low absorption, chronic diarrhoea, and celiac disease are associated with magnesium loss. Even those who suffer from alcohol use disorder are also at increased risk of this life-threatening deficiency.
What are the signs of magnesium deficiency?
Magnesium deficiency may be underdiagnosed since the signs commonly do not appear until levels become severely low. A few of these include:
Mental health conditions
Mental health conditions are possible symptoms of magnesium deficiency, which causes anxiety, depression, and mood disorders.
Muscle twitches and cramps
If you are wondering why, despite taking enough vitamin D, you continue to experience more cramps in your muscles, it could be due to extremely low levels of magnesium. Apart from cramps, it also causes twitches and tremors due to a greater flow of calcium into your nerve cells, which overexcites or hyperstimulates the muscle nerves.
Osteoporosis
Excess vitamin D3 and magnesium deficiency are high-risk factors for osteoporosis, a painful bone and joint condition. According to experts, this deficiency weakens your bones directly and lowers the blood levels of calcium as we age.
High blood pressure
Magnesium deficiency increases blood pressure levels and promotes hypertension, which can eventually cause a heart attack or a stroke if not dealt with in time.
Asthma
Magnesium’s anti-inflammatory and airway-opening properties can reduce your risk of chronic asthma. And so, if there is a deficiency, your condition would just get worse, especially in winter.
How can you increase your magnesium levels?
Magnesium is found abundantly in both plant- and animal-based foods. According to doctors, the richest sources include:
Whole grains
Beans
Leafy green vegetables
If you have a health condition that causes your body to lose magnesium, like type 2 diabetes, doctors suggest you must eat plenty of magnesium-rich foods or take supplements.
