Kolkata Witnesses Increase In Viral Diseases; Know What You Should Do Prevent Infections
Kolkata Witnesses Increase In Viral Diseases
There has been an increase in the number of viral diseases across Kolkata. These include influenza, conjunctivitis, Covid, dengue and diarrhoea said a report in The Telegraph. According to the report, doctors say that most of these are due to the influenza A virus which is causing the viral infection. In some cases, elderly patients and people with comorbidities even need hospitalisation.
Experts suggest that children up to 5 years, adults above 65, pregnant women and those with comorbidities should get vaccinated against influenza.
According to the report, Chandramouli Bhattacharya, an infectious disease specialist at Peerless Hospital, said H1N1 and H3N2, both influenza A viruses, have been found to be the most common flu viruses in the current outbreak.
Bhattacharya said, “A large number of people are getting infected by influenza A viruses. The typical symptoms include a high-grade fever of about 102 or 103 degrees Fahrenheit for two to three days.
“In our region, influenza outbreaks are reported during the monsoon. Such outbreaks also happen during winter. Vaccination is a very good defence against influenza
“Children up to five years, adults ages 65 or more, those who are immuno-compromised or have comorbidities, pregnant women and healthcare workers should take a flu vaccine immediately.”
Prabhas Prasun Giri, Paediatrician at the Institute of Child Health said that the majority of children with respiratory symptoms are testing positive for influenza.
Siddhartha Ghosh, Ophthalmologist at Global Eye Hospital in Salt Lake said that the increase in viral infection has also led to a surge in conjunctivitis. He said, “Inflammation of the eyes, pink eyes, irritation and water discharge from the eyes are the common symptoms.” Most people are getting better within seven to 10 days.
Ghosh suggested that people who have conjunctivitis should avoid going to school and work. Also, they should stop swimming till their condition gets better. People who wear contact lenses should not wear them during the infection.
Along with these, there has also been a rise in the number of dengue cases. Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) sources said that nearly 40 cases of dengue were reported in seven days till July 21. Kolkata has reported 184 dengue cases this year since January.
During monsoon, there is a rise in viral infections. Hence, you should take precautionary measures that help to prevent these diseases. Here, take a look at some of the ways to prevent these viral infections during monsoon.
Maintain Hygiene
Make sure to regularly wash your hands with soap and water as this can prevent the spread of viruses. Also, use hand sanitizers when soap isn’t available.
Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of fluids as it helps to maintain your immune system. Water, herbal teas and fresh juices can be beneficial. However, avoid sugary drinks.
Balanced Diet
A balanced diet that is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants helps to strengthen the immune system. Include fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains in your diet.
Use Insect Repellents
Mosquitoes breed during monsoon and can transmit diseases like dengue and malaria. Use repellents, wear long sleeves and make sure that your living space is mosquito-free with nets and screens.
Boost Immunity
You can consider taking immunity-boosting supplements like Vitamin C, Vitamin D and zinc after consulting your doctor. These can help your immune system to fight infections during the monsoon season.
Avoid Stagnant Water
Stagnant water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Make sure there’s no water collecting around your home and regularly clean water containers.
Stay Clean and Dry
Dampness can lead to the growth of fungal infections and respiratory issues. Keep yourself dry, change wet clothes immediately and make sure that your living space is well-ventilated and dry.
