5 Warning Signs You Might Need Hip Replacement
Doctors advise doing this surgery when your hip joint is worn out or damaged
If you have been experiencing excruciating pain on your backside which is causing difficulty in moving, you would know the impact it can have on your life. Not only does it limit your mobility, but and can also affect your mental health. While according to experts, in some cases the pain can be managed with the help of medication, a few severe cases would need hip replacement surgery.
Doctors advise doing this surgery when your hip joint is worn out or damaged. “If hip pain or immobility affects the ability to enjoy life, it’s a significant sign. When the hip issues prevent a person from doing the things a person loves, whether it's playing with grandchildren, enjoying a walk, or even performing daily tasks, it’s time to consider a hip replacement,” Dr. Ashish Arbat, Consultant Orthopedics, Manipal Hospital, told Times Now.
According to Dr. Arbat, it is important to recognize the conditions early on to live an active and pain-free lifestyle. “If you or a loved one are experiencing these symptoms, it's essential to seek medical advice promptly to explore treatment options and improve your quality of life," he said.
How do you know you may need a hip replacement?
Various symptoms suggest you may need hip replacement surgery, even though these can vary from one person to another. It is also important to talk to a doctor for a diagnosis first if you are experiencing any of the symptoms below:
Chronic hip pain
According to Dr. Pratik Gupta, Consultant Orthopedics and Joints Replacement Surgeon at Manipal Hospital, a problem with your hip joint causes extreme pain in your hip groin area. This pain can be present when you are active and when resting, both in the day and at night. “The patients with hip osteoarthritis typically complain of pain in the groin region,” he said.
Pain can prevent you from walking distances that you normally do.
Stiffness in your hips
If you have been experiencing stiffness while walking, bending, or moving your hip joint, apart from not being able to lift or move your leg, then it could be a sign that your hip joint is damaged. “Difficulty in performing simple movements such as bending, squatting or walking due to the stiffness,” said Dr. Gupta.
It also causes soreness, stiffness, and inflammation of your hip joint - all indicators that sooner or later, your hip may begin to interfere with your ability to carry out everyday activities. This may make it difficult for you to sleep, enjoy your hobbies, and socialize, which can affect your mental health.
Loss of motion
Severe pain and stiffness can bring loss in the range of motion in your hip. If you are no longer as mobile as were earlier, you will find it difficult to do daily chores and activities. “Trouble putting on shoes and socks as these movements typically occur at the hip joint and patients have difficulty in putting on shoes and socks. Similarly, they are also having difficulty in getting in and out of the car.”
Sleep disturbances
"The sleep is disturbed because of the hip pain, and they have to wake up multiple times at night because of the pain,” he said.
Visible changes and sounds
There may be many visible changes at the outer surface of your hip like experiencing redness and swelling caused by inflammation. Many times, you may also hear a grating, grinding, or popping sound when you move your hip.
