World Cancer Day: IPS Officer Nidhin Valsan’s Inspiring Battle with Cancer and Triumph in the Ironman Triathlon
'A diagnosis isn’t the end of your story; it’s just a tough chapter,” says Valsan.
When cancer comes knocking, everything seems to stop. The uncertainty, fear, and physical impact can be quite overwhelming. But for Kerala-born IPS officer Nidhin Valsan, cancer was not the end of his journey—it was the beginning of a transformative fight. Diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 2020, just before his 35th birthday, he faced one of the toughest battles of his life. He, however, came out of it stronger than ever, as resilience and determination can conquer the most daunting of challenges.
Facing the Diagnosis
Valsan recalls the moment he received his diagnosis with mixed emotions. “Surprisingly, I was both happy and sad at the same time,” he says. While the news was devastating, he also felt a sense of relief in finally understanding the reason behind his persistent pain, extreme fatigue, and insomnia. Accepting the diagnosis, he decided to confront the disease head-on, supported by his family, parents, and friends.
The Path to Recovery
Determined to fight cancer, Valsan adopted a disciplined lifestyle, prioritising a balanced diet and regular exercise. He quit alcohol and smoking—two major risk factors for poor health—and committed to an active and mindful life. His dedication to fitness led him to take on one of the most gruelling endurance events in the world: the Ironman Triathlon. The Ironman 70.3 race, consisting of a 1.9 km sea swim, 90 km cycling, and a 21.1 km run, is a challenge even for the fittest athletes. Yet, Valsan not only participated but completed the race, demonstrating extraordinary mental and physical endurance.
Words of Wisdom for Cancer Fighters
Reflecting on his journey, Valsan shares a message of hope for those newly diagnosed with cancer. “A diagnosis isn’t the end of your story; it’s just a tough chapter,” he says. He emphasises the importance of surrounding oneself with a strong support system, whether it’s family, friends, or support groups. “Some days will be hard, and that’s normal. But find those small wins, whether it’s a good meal, a laugh with a friend, or just getting out of bed. Focus on what you can control, and hold onto hope. You’re stronger than you think.”
The Role of Early Detection and Prevention
Valsan believes early detection and regular screenings can significantly improve cancer outcomes. “Catching cancer early often means it’s easier to treat and hasn’t spread to other parts of the body,” he says. Early intervention not only increases the chances of recovery but also reduces the need for aggressive treatment.
Through his personal experience, Valsan advises maintaining a balanced diet, staying physically active, and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption. “Regular health check-ups and screenings are crucial because early detection can save lives,” he stresses. Valsan says mental well-being plays a huge role, recommending stress management and adequate sleep as key components of overall health.
A Story of Hope and Determination
Valsan’s incredible journey from battling cancer to completing the Ironman Triathlon is documented in his memoir, Cancer Man to Ironman: A Police Officer’s Journey of Arresting Illness. The book serves as an inspiration for all cancer patients, reminding them that they too have the strength to overcome their illness and achieve their dreams. His story is a testament to the power of resilience, hope, and an unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.
