GenZs say their mental health has gotten better since shunning social media. You know how being on social media can be exhausting - those nights spent in silence endlessly scrolling until the dawn breaks -- we have all been there! But a foe nobody REALLY talks about is how social media affects our day to day lives. Being engrossed in the Instagram lives of our co-workers and peers, comparing our "not-so-happening" lives to other people's hep lives, and then coping with the immense burden that comes attached to it.
Many people have spoken about how the 'constant negativity' was affecting them and they feel better since taking a break. Also, a research showed that a quarter of the respondents felt anxious due to the noise of constant notifications.
According to the same research, GenZs - people born between 1996 and 2010 - are most likely to say that social media impacts their wellbeing. And being a GenZ myself, I stand by it! I was in my teen years when I started my Instagram account. It was the last year of my high school and ever since then I have never spent more than a few hours logged out of my account - I am 27 now!
What was once a delightful space for photography and networking - the two things I love the most - soon became an obsession tangled with anxiousness and self-doubt.
Remember what life was like before Instagram? Most millennials have lived through it, so it is possible to return to it again - or I thought so! Being a Journalist, it is difficult for me to stay off social media for long durations. Tracking trends, designs, travel destinations is a part of my job. But at the same time, I was crippled with self-doubt and left wondering why my life is not like that travel vlogger who is taking 3 international trips in a month or why can I not attain glass skin. This left me in a pickle! And therefore I gave in and deleted my Instagram - something I never thought would bring me so much good!
As soon as I uninstalled the app, a wave of freedom took over me. The kind of freedom I had not experienced in a long time - freedom of not having to be bombarded with a thousand irrelevant memes, freedom from the regular posting, freedom from keeping up with trends. While FOMO did set in for some part of the day. But, with each passing day, it only got better. After a complete week, I re-installed Instagram to see what all I had missed, and to my surprise - NOT MUCH.
According to a research by mobile phone company HMD Global, three in five people in the GenZ age bracket are regularly undertaking social media detox to reconnect with the world around them.
While being hopelessly devoted to social media, we have got lost in terms of speaking face to face. For all I know, I don't want to be swept up in the world of nothingness and therefore I chose to erase it before it erased my self worth. Keeping in mind the nature of my work, I make it a point to take a break from the social apps' world at least once a month, even if it is for five days. It has become an expression of self love for me. I have done my bit for my own self and you should now do it too!
