Beware of THESE Most Dangerous Medicines In the World, According to Experts
Taking medicines the wrong way or mixing certain drugs and supplements can lead to dangerous consequences
According to experts, among the most dangerous medicines in the world are those that millions across the world commonly use at home. These include a cold and flu remedy, which doctors say you must be wary of.
While medication is much needed to get off an illness or condition, it is also important to be aware that it can lead to unwanted side effects, which can also be life-threatening. According to doctors, taking medicines the wrong way or mixing certain drugs and supplements can lead to dangerous consequences. A few medicines that you need to be careful of include:
Blood thinners
According to experts, blood thinners, like warfarin, need to be carefully monitored, or else they can lead to severe and potentially life-threatening bleeding. Also known as anticoagulants, these medicines help prevent blood clots from forming in those who have a high risk of stroke or heart attack.
Blood thinners can also lead to side effects in some people, which include:
Heavy periods
Bloody or discolored urine or feces
Nosebleeds
Bleeding gums
Prolonged bleeding from a cut
Easy bruising
Dizziness
Muscle weakness
Hair loss
Rashes
Doctors also say various foods, herbs, and medications can interfere with blood thinners. These substances can make the drug more or less effective than your dosage would suggest. However, not all blood thinners are affected by the same substances. It’s important to speak with your doctor or cardiologist about your diet and how it may impact the effectiveness of your medication.
Antidepressants
Antidepressants help those with severe depression. Even though they are not recommended for mild depression unless other treatments like talking therapy have not helped, a few of these, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts in some individuals. Studies say mostly young people under 25 years seem particularly at risk.
For many patients, SSRIs also enhance serotonin activity if these drugs are taken along with other medicines, leading to a rare condition known as the serotonin syndrome. It causes racing heart, sweating, high fever, high blood pressure, and sometimes delirium. In particular, SSRIs should not be mixed with certain other medications, especially any herbal remedy.
To make sure that the antidepressants that you are taking are safe, make sure to always get the dosage prescribed by your doctor before taking them and never stop without consultation.
Decongestant nasal sprays
You should not be using a decongestant nasal spray or drops for more than one week at a time. Using these types of medications for too long can make your stuffiness worse.
According to doctors, these sprays—the usual remedy for colds and flu—also rebound called rhinitis medicamentosa—a condition that occurs when you overuse the sprays. Decongestant sprays contain chemicals that shrink congested blood vessels. That is how they open up your clogged passages. After a few days, though, the blood vessels stop responding to the medication. You spray away, but your problem just gets worse. This cycle can continue for months, years, and even decades.
Also, even though it is very rare, serious side effects include posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, or PRES, and reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome, or RCVS, according to experts. These conditions are characterized by severe headaches, visual changes, confusion, and seizures, which require immediate medical attention.
