We all want to live a long and healthy life. However, there are so many daily habits that we don't even know about but are damaging our health. In a recent report by The Sun, Dr Mayoni Gooneratne, from Human Health, spoke about some day-to-day habit that could be impacting our lifestyle. Have a look:
Snoozing
While you might be in a snooze war with your alarm daily, you need to understand that it won't do you any favors. It is important for you to get your morning sunlight as it keeps you aligned with your natural body clock. It can help you get to sleep faster in the evening.
Coffee and croissant
Enjoying your croissant and coffee when late to work? Lucy Jones, dietitian and chief clinical officer, while speaking to the Sun said, “Eating in the car or in a rush often leads to poor food choices.” Foods which are high in sugar and refined carbs, such as croissant, cause blood sugar to rise. This can cause a drop in energy levels.
Seated till late morning
If you have not had the chance to get up from your desk by 10-11am, then you could be heading towards health problems. A sedentary lifestyle is the root cause of many health-related issues. Japanese researchers showed that participants who walked for more than an hour per day had a longer life expectancy than those who did so for less than an hour. Getting away from your desk for a brisk stroll can also reduce stress levels.
Post-work drinking
If you enjoy going to a bar after your usual shift, then we have a bad news for you. Research by Maastricht University Medical Centre, Netherlands, has shown that the highest probability of reaching 90 years was in those people drinking less than 15g of alcohol per day. Dr Gooneratne says: “Alcohol is a toxin and it stops your liver from breaking down your usual toxins, and they act as empty calories, so there is no nutritional value. It disinhibits you from your usual behaviors so you’re more likely to make poorer health choices and drink more.”
Late sofa dinner
Avoid the habit of eating late at night, on the sofa, especially with a takeaway. You should aim to eat at the table together with your partner or children. This is done so that you can check in on each other. "Eating on the sofa in front of the TV involves no social connection and it lacks all mindfulness," says Dr Gooneratne.
