5 Reasons Why You Should Shower Daily, Apart From Cleanliness
Daily baths are linked to a significant reduction in stress hormones and more balanced serotonin levels
As kids, most people loved taking baths – splashing in a shower or a bathtub. However, once you grow up, there is not much time to enjoy yourself, and it then becomes a daily chore you need to do to keep yourself clean. According to Harvard Health, apart from considering it healthy to bathe daily, many people choose to shower daily for several reasons, including:
Concerns about body odour
Help waking up and feeling fresh
A morning routine that may include working out
Why should you take a bath every day?
A few reasons why bathing daily is good for you and a few tips for getting the most from them, include:
Helps improve mental health
According to experts, daily baths are linked to a significant reduction in stress hormones and more balanced serotonin levels – which help regulate mood. “A bath can be a wonderful form of self-care, offering relaxation with soothing music, a good book, and your favorite scents,” Dr. Divya Gopal, Consultant, Internal Medicine, Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital told Times Now.
It helps relieve stress and calms you mentally. Doctors say stress is connected to a number of health issues like:
Sore muscles
Heart diseases
Indigestion and acid reflux
Weak immunity
Weight gain
Studies say warm bath therapy has a positive effect on people living with depression as it helps regulate mood.
Regulate sleep
It is widely known that for overall health and well-being, it is important to regulate and boost your sleep capacity for 8-9 hours daily. And so, experts say taking a warm shower or bath before bed helps you fall asleep faster and better. A bath can make you cozy, bringing your blood to the surface – pulling heat from the core, and leading to lower body temperature which promotes relaxation and uninterrupted sleep.
Experts say baths also create a great surrounding and environment for meditation – which helps you escape from daily stress. “For best results, enjoy a 10- to 15-minute bath about an hour before bedtime,” Dr. Gopal added.
Helps in faster wound healing
Bathing daily aids and soothes infected sores and wounds. According to doctors, soaking an affected area with a warm saltwater solution aids faster healing. But some wounds should be kept dry, so always make sure to check with your doctor before dipping.
Soothes muscle and joint pains
Soaking in a warm often helps relieve muscle soreness, tension, pain, and even inflammation. According to doctors, baths also help you relieve your achy muscles and improve your range of motion and your ability to exercise.
However, you can also consider ice baths for similar effects – as they help alleviate sore muscles. Chill the bath temperature to between 53-68 degrees Fahrenheit (about 12 to 20 degrees Celsius) and soak in for 10-15 minutes for quick effect.
Skin exfoliation
Of course, bathing helps you keep yourself clean, since sweat and dirt stick to your skin, clogging the pores and causing bacterial and fungal growth, which gives rise to various kinds of infections. “Warm water opens your pores, allowing for a deeper cleanse and better effectiveness of your soap,” said Dr. Gopal.
And so, while in bath, weekly get on to scrubbing all over your face and body, to keep your skin silky smooth. It also helps you avoid irritation, inflammation, and sores caused by dead skin cell accumulation. Warm water can open up skin pores and flush out the grime that builds up over the day and lets your soap really get in and do its job.
How often should you shower in a day?
Experts say while there is no ideal frequency, showering twice a day – once in the morning and another right before bed is great for most people. Short showers - lasting three or four minutes with a focus on the armpits and groin may suffice.
