5 Common Medicines You Must Never Mix With Your Morning Coffee
Coffee interacts with medicines and modifies the time it may take to get absorbed into your bloodstream
Millions of people across the world begin their day with a hot, steaming cup of coffee which works as a laxative – a common effect of caffeine. According to studies, coffee stimulates your stomach, changing the time it takes for food to make it through your digestive system. However, it can also interact with certain medicines that you may be taking and modify the time it may take to get absorbed into your bloodstream.
And so, various studies have reported that drinking coffee at the same time as your medication affects how well it can work for you. Doctors say caffeine significantly affects the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of many drugs.
Which medicines to avoid popping with your coffee?
Antibiotics
Antibiotics help treat and prevent bacterial infection by stimulating the central nervous system. And since coffee is also a stimulant, taking the two together can cause restlessness and the inability to sleep – in the long run causing insomnia.
Many other allergy medicines like fexofenadine should not be taken with coffee as it overstimulates your central nervous system - increasing the symptoms of restlessness.
Thyroid medicines
For those who have hypothyroidism – in which your gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone, it can lead to weight gain, dry skin, joint pain, severe hair loss, and even irregular menstrual periods in women.
And so, for those who take medication to balance out their hormones, drinking coffee alone with it only makes the medicine less effective for you. Doctors say coffee brings down the absorption of thyroid medicine by more than half.
Asthma medication
Asthma medication makes it easier for you to breathe easier by relaxing the muscles in your lungs and widening the airways. However, caffeine is a mild bronchodilator, which reduces the effectiveness of these medicines, which mostly treat conditions, which include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD.
Doctors say bronchodilators when interfering with the medication can also cause headaches, restlessness, stomach pain, and irritability, especially in children.
Diabetes medication
Mixing your coffee with sugar or milk can cause an instant spike in blood sugar levels and impact how well your diabetes medication works. Apart from that, doctors say caffeine also worsens symptoms for people with diabetes.
Alzheimer's medicine
Alzheimer's is one of the leading causes of death across the world and mostly affects people over the age of 65 years. According to experts, it is a brain disorder that results in a loss of cognitive function - making it extremely difficult to think, remember, or go about your daily tasks.
Millions of people who live with Alzheimer’s take medication for the condition. However, doctors say medicines like donepezil, rivastigmine, and galantamine are extremely affected by caffeine. The caffeine tightens up the blood-brain barrier and lowers the effect of the drug. Alzheimer’s medications work by protecting the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and drinking high amounts of coffee has been shown to impair that protective effect.
