Healthy Young Woman Dies After A Popular Beverage Triggers Heart Attack; Know What Energy Drinks Can Do To Your Body
Katie, an elementary teacher, was described as the 'epitome of health' by her mum
A young 28-year-old girl tragically passed away from a heart attack, which her mother says was triggered by her habit of drinking energy drinks. "I was shocked," 63-year-old Lori Barranon from Florida, told The Sun. "I knew I hated [energy drinks], but I didn't know they could be deadly."
Katie, an elementary teacher, was described as the "epitome of health" by her mom, who said she had no known underlying heart conditions before the terrible incident. "She was a workout queen; she ate real clean and only ate organic food." However, her mother said Katie suffered from “horrible anxiety” and went to several doctors. "I don't think it was real anxiety; I think it was her abuse of caffeine and energy drinks," she said.
According to Lori, fitness-crazy Katie consumed at least three cans of energy drinks every day while also taking energy-enhancing supplements to help fuel her twice-a-day sessions. "One of her friends said she'd hardly see Katie without an energy drink in her hands," she said. "When I cleaned out her car after she passed it was full of cans, at least three or four in there."
How do energy drinks cause heart issues?
According to experts, energy drink consumption leads to extreme issues with your heart, including high blood pressure, arrhythmias, and even heart attacks.
Energy drinks are packed with sugar and caffeine, which is way above the prescribed 100 milligrams for adolescents and 400 mg for adults, as some of these beverages contain more than 500 mg, which leads to caffeine toxicity.
The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention say a combination of high caffeine and other stimulants in energy drinks leads to increased heart rate and blood pressure, both of which are high-risk factors for heart disease. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) also notes that too much of these drinks can lead to heart rhythm disturbances and other health issues.
Which ingredients in energy drinks should you watch out for?
When consuming energy drinks, always be aware of many ingredients that can severely affect your health, including:
Caffeine
It is the primary stimulant in energy drinks, and too much caffeine can cause palpitations, increased heart rate, and high blood pressure.
Taurine
When it gets combined with caffeine, taurine amplifies stimulant effects, potentially shooting up heart rate and blood pressure.
Guarana
Guarana contains additional caffeine, increasing the total caffeine content in the drink.
Ginseng
While ginseng is considered generally safe, its effectiveness is limited. Some herbal supplements may also interact with prescription medications. Check with your healthcare provider before consuming ginseng.
Sugar
Sugar leads to high levels of obesity, a big factor in heart disease.
