Navratri is a sacred period of fasting, devotion, and discipline observed by millions across India. During these nine days, people follow a restricted diet, avoiding grains, certain spices, and processed foods. But what about coffee? Can you enjoy your daily cup while fasting, or does it break the rules?
Is Coffee Allowed During Navratri Fast?
Dr Rajesh Kumar Padhan, Clinical Director- Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram, explains that coffee is generally allowed if the fast includes food and drinks rather than complete abstinence from consumption.
"Coffee is permissible if you're on a restricted diet and consuming certain foods or drinks during Navratri," says Dr Padhan. "However, drinking coffee on an empty stomach is not advisable, as it can increase acidity and spike blood sugar levels."
While coffee provides an energy boost and enhances alertness, it lacks the essential nutrients required to sustain a person through the fasting period. Dr Padhan suggests pairing coffee with nuts, fruits, or whole grains to maintain stable energy levels. "It is better to accompany coffee with nourishing foods to prevent acidity and fatigue," he advises.
What Type of Coffee is Best for Navratri Fast?
Pratiksha Kadam, Chief Dietitian at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Navi Mumbai, emphasizes that coffee consumption depends on how strictly one follows the fast.
Allowed Coffees During Navratri Fast:
Black Coffee – Made only with water and coffee, making it an acceptable option.
Milk Coffee – If dairy is permitted in your fasting routine, coffee with regular milk is allowed.
Jaggery Coffee – Instead of sugar, using jaggery as a sweetener is a better alternative.
Coffee to Avoid:
Instant Coffee – Some brands contain additives or preservatives that may not align with fasting rules.
Flavored Coffees – Variants like vanilla, hazelnut, or caramel coffee contain artificial ingredients that are best avoided.
Best Alternatives to Coffee During Navratri
If you're looking for other energising beverages during the fast, here are some expert-recommended options:
Coconut Water – Hydrating and packed with electrolytes, it's a great option to keep energy levels up.
Buttermilk or Milk – Provides protein and helps prevent dehydration.
Lemon Water – A refreshing, detoxifying drink that aids digestion.
Herbal Teas – Tulsi, ginger, or cardamom teas (without tea leaves) offer a soothing and caffeine-free alternative.
Sabudana Milk Drink – A nutritious and filling option made with sabudana (tapioca pearls) and milk.
So Can You Have Coffee While Fasting?
The answer is yes—but with some conditions. If your fasting routine permits beverages, black coffee or milk coffee are acceptable choices. However, it's best to avoid drinking coffee on an empty stomach, as it may lead to acidity. Opt for nourishing alternatives like coconut water or herbal teas to stay energised while keeping your fast intact.
