What Is Causing Sudden Cardiac Arrest In Youngsters with No Known Health Issues?
Intense activities tend to increase one’s heart rate and oxygen demand, pressurizing the heart and causing a sudden cardiac arrest
Sudden cardiac arrest happens when your heart stops beating suddenly – which has become common among young people today. According to experts, it is happening because of undiagnosed heart conditions like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, or congenital heart defects. And so, it is not just important to go for regular cardiac screening but also to understand the symptoms and causes of the condition.
What can be the triggers for sudden cardiac arrest in someone with an undiagnosed heart condition?
According to doctors, intense physical exertion like dancing, can trigger an arrhythmia or cardiac arrest in those with undiagnosed heart conditions such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or Long QT syndrome. “Intense activities tend to increase one’s heart rate and oxygen demand, pressurizing the heart and causing a sudden cardiac arrest or a heart attack. It is better to avoid doing any intense activities,” Dr. Bipeenchandra Bhamre, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre, told Times Now.
What undetected heart conditions could lead to sudden cardiac arrest in young women?
Dr. Bhamre said undetected heart conditions can raise the risk of sudden cardiac arrest in young women due to congenital heart defects, and myocarditis. These conditions are usually triggered due to stress, exertion, or an abnormal heart rhythm.
While it is not so common for a young and healthy person to suffer from a heart attack or a cardiac arrest during dancing – those with any kind of preexisting heart condition may experience them more.
Case studies of those in their early 20s with heart attacks
Dr. Bhamre shared case studies of his patient Rohit Khanna (name changed) - a 27-year-old working professional who suffered from a heart attack at home after returning from work. However, his condition was managed with angioplasty due to timely treatment.
“The cause of his heart attack was stress, a history of smoking, high cholesterol levels, and unmanaged hypertension,” said Dr. Bhamre.
What are the early signs and symptoms that youngsters should be aware of?
A few signs and symptoms young people should be aware of include:
Chest pain
Tightness
Arm weakness
Pain
Excessive sweating
Breathlessness
What is the role of hormonal fluctuation or the use of birth control medication in heart problems in young women?
According to Dr. Bhamre, hormonal fluctuations, and birth control medications loaded with estrogen can lead to blood clots, high blood pressure, and, in rare cases, heart problems in young women.
The role of CPR in cases of sudden cardiac arrest
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR is a life-saving technique in cases of sudden cardiac arrest, as it tends to maintain blood flow to vital organs until emergency help arrives. Bystanders should immediately call emergency services and start with chest compressions for the person who collapses suddenly until help arrives. Doctors believe CPR training should be mandatory for all as it can help to save a person’s life.
