A new study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders in April 2025 has revealed an interesting connection: regular sex may play a role in supporting good mental health. The findings show the potential benefits of maintaining an active sex life when it comes to emotional well-being.
Researchers analyzed data from over 14,000 US adults, aged between 20 and 59, to understand how sexual activity might influence mental health across a broad age spectrum. The results were striking. People who engaged in sexual activity at least once a week were about 24 per cent less likely to show symptoms of moderate to severe depression compared to those who had not engaged in sexual activity at all in the past month.
Interestingly, the study found that the optimal frequency for reaping mental health benefits appears to be one to two times per week. Engaging in sexual activity more often than that did not seem to offer any additional boost to mental health—the benefits levelled off after this point.
Another key finding is that this trend held steady across various factors such as age, marital status, income, and overall physical health. However, the strongest link between regular sex and reduced depression symptoms was seen among younger adults, especially within Mexican American and non-Hispanic White participant groups.
While the study stops short of saying that sex directly prevents depression, it points toward a powerful cyclical relationship. People who are in better moods may be more inclined to engage in sexual activity, and sexual activity itself might help maintain or enhance those good moods. Researchers explain that sex triggers the release of feel-good chemicals like endorphins and oxytocin, which are known to lower stress and promote emotional bonding—both crucial elements in managing depression and anxiety.
Of course, experts caution that while sex can be beneficial for mental health, it is not a standalone solution for depression. Comprehensive mental health care requires a broader approach. Here are a few additional ways to support your mental wellbeing:

Ultimately, this new study reminds us that intimacy and emotional connection are deeply tied to our mental well-being. While a regular sex life may not be a magic fix, it can certainly be a valuable part of a larger, holistic approach to mental health.
