Gaming Addiction in Teens: Expert Shares The Psychological Impact And Warning Signs Every Parent Should Know
Gaming Addiction in Teens
Video game addiction is a condition which is characterised by severely reduced control over gaming habits which results in negative consequences in many aspects of your life. This can include gaming on the internet or other electronic devices. Most people who develop gaming issues usually play on the internet. A lot of researchers consider video game addiction as a behavioural addiction which is similar to gambling disorder, in which the rush of winning becomes one of the main reasons for playing.
Gaming in children and teenagers has become extremely popular which has caused them to get addicted. Gaming addiction in teens has become a significant problem and this has affected other aspects of their life. Speaking to Times Now, Neha Cadabam, Senior Psychologist and Executive Director at Cadabams Hospitals shares the psychological impact of gaming addiction on teenagers.
Gaming addiction can have profound psychological impacts. As the addiction deepens, it often leads to a range of emotional and behavioural issues. Teens may experience increased irritability, anxiety and depression as they become more immersed in gaming and less engaged with real-world activities. This detachment can severely affect their social relationships, academic performance and overall mental health.
Moreover, gaming addiction can lead to the development of impulsive behaviours and reduced attention spans. “The constant stimulation from gaming creates a need for immediate rewards, which can make it difficult for teens to cope with situations requiring patience and sustained effort,” said Neha.
Over time, these psychological impacts can become deeply entrenched, leading to more severe mental health issues that require comprehensive treatment and intervention
Warning Symptoms Of Gaming Addiction Parents Should Watch Out
Identifying gaming addiction early is important for preventing long-term psychological harm. Here, take a look at some of the warning signs parents should look out for.
Preoccupation with Gaming
If your teen is constantly thinking about gaming, even when they’re not playing, it could be a sign of addiction. They may talk excessively about gaming, spend most of their free time planning their next gaming session or show signs of distress when they can’t play.
Neglecting Responsibilities
A noticeable decline in academic performance, neglect of chores or ignoring personal hygiene highlights that gaming has taken precedence over essential responsibilities.
Social Withdrawal
Teens suffering from gaming addiction often withdraw from family and friends, preferring to spend time alone gaming rather than engaging in social activities or hobbies they once enjoyed.
Mood Changes
Look for sudden mood swings, irritability or signs of depression when your teen is not gaming or is asked to stop gaming. They may become defensive or even aggressive when confronted about their gaming habits.
Loss of Interest in Other Activities
If your teen has lost interest in activities they previously enjoyed, such as sports, reading or spending time with friends, this could indicate that gaming has become an unhealthy obsession.
Deceptive Behaviour
Teens may lie about the amount of time they spend gaming or they might play in secret to avoid being caught. They may also start asking for money to spend on in-game purchases.
