Scientists Developing Vaping-like Gadgets That Vaporize Drugs To Treat Common Ailments Faster
The drugs, which could be inhaled like vapes, can help treat even serious conditions like asthma and COPD, making them kick in faster
Scientists are developing gadgets that contain drugs that can help treat common ailments faster than pills, aiming to ease the future of prescriptions. These vape-like gadgets could vaporize medicines like painkillers, anti-depressants, and even migraine treatments, according to The Sun.
The drugs, which could be inhaled like vapes, can help treat even serious conditions like asthma and COPD, making them kick in faster and help patients stick to doses by electronically restricting them to only a few puffs a day. “This technology is very promising. The devices would fit in your pocket and be easy to use without any training. “This would help patients stick to their medication so we can reduce hospitalizations and save the NHS money,” said Dr. Federico Buonocore, from Kingston University, South West London, who conducted a study showing the e-cigarettes technology would work with asthma drug salbutamol.
US drugmakers hoping prescription drugs get approval in the UK
US-based pharmaceutical company Qnovia says it hopes to get its RespiRx nicotine replacement device approved for prescription in the UK in 2026, to help smokers quit. “One of the biggest benefits is the speed of delivery to the bloodstream. Injection is the fastest and then inhalation comes next, before pills or skin patches,” said Qnivia head Brian Quigley.
"This could work in areas where you need immediate relief."
How do vaping devices work?
Vaping devices - also known as e-cigarettes, are battery-powered devices that heat a liquid to create an aerosol that the user inhales. The aerosol is often called vapor and looks like a thick cloud or is hard to see when exhaled.
The liquid, also known as e-juice, e-liquid, juice, or smoke juice, contains nicotine, flavoring, and other chemicals. When the user inhales, the aerosol is inhaled into the lungs and the nicotine and chemicals cross over into the bloodstream. Some vaporizers have a power button that controls the on/off switch, while others are only activated when the user draws on the mouthpiece.
Vaping is popular among teens across the world and is a popular form of tobacco use among young people in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
However, experts have linked vaping with the appearance of a severe lung disease now known as e-cigarette, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury, or EVALI. By February 2022, doctors had confirmed more than 2,000 cases and 68 deaths from this disease, according to the CDC.
