The World Health Organization has defined Diabetes as a chronic condition that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. According to the data, in 2014, 8.5% of adults aged 18 years and older had diabetes. In 2019, diabetes was the direct cause of 1.5 million deaths and 48% of these deaths occurred before the age of 70 years.
Celebrity nutritionist Suman Agrawal recently appeared on Ranveer Allahbadia's podcast show. While speaking about the importance of nutrition, she emphasized how diabetes can be a "silent killer." She said, "Our nation is full of diabetic people. It is definitely present in some or the other gene. Nearly 10 crore people in our nation are suffering with this disease."
With this, she highlighted the importance of getting tested for your insulin sensitivity. She explained, "Whatever you are consuming, gets converted into sugar - be it fat or protein. Your body will break it down and convert it into glucose."
Nutritionist Suman further spoke about certain dietary aspects that one should inculcate in their lifestyle to alleviate the risk of diabetes. Here are a few takeaways:
It is good to consume a different vegetable every day
Only few vegetables can be eaten raw - capsicum, onion, tomatoes, carrot, spinach, gherkin
Beetroot should be eaten boiled. Some people can face digestion issues when consuming raw beetroot. Therefore, it is advised to boil it first and then consume.
Avoid consuming fruits on an empty stomach in the morning
Diabetic people should avoid eating fruits
People with diabetes should consume only 10 fruits, which are: Apple, pear, Pomegranate, Guava, Cherry, Strawberry, Orange, Papanas, Jamun, and Dragon fruit.
Diabetic people should strictly avoid Papayas
Diabetes symptoms to look out for
Common signs and symptoms of diabetes include increased thirst and urination, blurred vision, fatigue, and unexplained weight loss. Individuals with type 1 diabetes may also experience nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. It is important to report any of these symptoms to your healthcare provider, as early diagnosis and management can prevent or delay the onset of complications.
