What Is Good Stress And Its Benefits On Your Health
Also known as eustress, good stress is the positive stress response involving optimal levels of stimulation that benefits your brain and body immensely
While stress is not considered healthy and there are various ways and means to control it, getting worked up is not always too bad. According to experts, your body's fight-or-flight response is meant to be protective, not harmful.
And so, good stress – also known as eustress – is the positive stress response involving optimal levels of stimulation that benefits your brain and body immensely. The American Psychological Association says this stress, that arises from doing something demanding can be enjoyable
How can stress be positive?
Mental health experts say short-term reactions to stress help you deal with anxiety and even depression sometimes. Stress can be advantageous in many ways:
It helps boost your brain
Low-level stress can invigorate the production of brain chemicals known as neurotrophins and strengthen the connections between neurons in the brain, which boosts productivity and concentration.
Experts say if you doubt the health benefits of stress on your brain, do a self-evaluation of your performance on days when you experience a higher amount of stress at work. According to studies, you may be more focused and productive than on low-stress days.
Increases immunity levels
Your body’s response to stress is due to some injury or infection, and so it produces – interleukins, which are chemicals that help regulate the immune system.
Makes you resilient and tough
Stressful situations can make you strong and adaptable to many future situations as it gives you a physical and psychological sense of control.
Motivates and helps you succeed
Stress and tension can challenge you in certain situations to give out your best. And so, it stimulates your behaviour to really manage the situation effectively, rapidly, and more productively.
Enhances the development of children
Even though elevated stress levels can have a negative impact on both mom and baby, most expecting mothers do everything humanly possible to stay healthy and minimize stress and anxiety while pregnant. Studies say that moderate stress levels during pregnancy do not harm a baby. They develop developmental skills by the age of years than babies born to unstressed mothers.
Good vs. Bad Stress
Experts say it is important to understand that stress can kill you if you do not recognize it and treat it aptly. You may be suffering from chronic stress -which is the bad type – that dominates your thoughts day in and day out – leading to heightened anxiety, tiredness, high blood pressure, depression, etc.
So, it is important to demarcate between good and bad stress and take adequate steps to get it treated before it becomes dangerous.
