Orhan Awatramani, popularly known as Orry in a recent interview said that he suffers from Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Speaking to Uorfi, Orry said that the biggest problem that he is suffering from at the moment is gas. He says, “The biggest hardship I am dealing with right now is gas.” He adds, “.... actually I have IBS.”
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a condition that affects the stomach and intestines which is also known as the gastrointestinal tract. IBS is a chronic condition and you need to take the necessary steps to manage the condition in the long-term. A very small number of people suffering from the condition have severe symptoms. Mayo Clinic says that some people can control their symptoms by managing diet, lifestyle and stress. More severe symptoms can be treated with medication and counselling. “IBS doesn’t cause changes in bowel tissue or increase your risk of colorectal cancer.”
Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Here, take a look at some of the common symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
Cramping
Bloating and gas
Constipation
Diarrhoea
Pain in the abdomen
Symptoms of bloating and gas might reduce after one has had a bowel movement. Also, an individual suffering from the condition might have both diarrhoea as well as constipation. Moreover, these symptoms might not stay for very long; you might not notice any sort of symptoms for some time and then suddenly, you might start to notice the symptoms coming back.
Causes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Here, take a look at some of the causes of irritable bowel syndrome, according to Mayo Clinic.
Muscle contractions in the intestine: The walls of the intestines are lined with layers of muscle that contract as they move food through your digestive tract. Contractions that are stronger and last longer than usual can cause gas, bloating and diarrhoea. Weak contractions can slow food passage and lead to hard, dry stools.
Nervous system: Issues with the nerves in your digestive system may cause discomfort when your abdomen stretches from gas or stool. When there poor signals between the brain and the intestine, it can affect your digestive process, thereby, causing IBS.
Severe infection: One might also have IBS after diarrhoea caused by bacteria or a virus which is known as gastroenteritis.
Early life stress: People exposed to stressful events, especially during childhood, tend to have symptoms of IBS.
Changes in gut microbes: Examples include changes in bacteria, fungi and viruses, which reside in the intestines and play a key role in health.
