FDA Issues Warning As Microdosing Chocolate Bars Are Still On Shelves Despite Recall, Hospitalizations
Many people were hospitalized after the consumption of popular mushroom-infused chocolate bars, cones, and gummies across 28 states
More than a month after federal health authorities issued warnings regarding Diamond Shruumz microdosing chocolates, the brand products are still on store shelves, the US Food and Drug Administration has said. Many people were hospitalized in serious condition after the consumption of popular mushroom-infused Diamond Shrummz chocolate bars, cones, and gummies across the US.
FDA is aware that recalled Diamond Shruumz-brand products are still on the shelves at several smoke/vape shops, and at retailers that sell hemp-derived products," the agency said in an update about the probe into the cases, which now spans 28 states.
At least 69 illnesses and 36 hospitalizations have now been linked to consuming Diamond Shruumz "edibles," according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - up from 58 illnesses and 30 hospitalizations last week. "Consumers should not purchase or consume any Diamond Shruumz-brand products. If you have seen a store continuing to sell recalled Diamond Shruumz-brand products, you can report this information to the FDA," the agency said.
Serious side effects reported
Serious hospitalizations were reported across the states of Arizona, Indiana, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Nevada, Pennsylvania and South Carolina. According to news reports, those who consumed the products reported experiencing symptoms like:
Seizures
Depression of the central nervous system depression
Loss of consciousness
Confusion
Excessive sleepiness
Agitation
Abnormal heart rates
Hyper and hypotension
Nausea and vomiting
According to the CDC hospitalizations of some patients have been extremely serious, with several being admitted to intensive care units and requiring intubation. Among the patients are several young children who fell sick after eating the candy-like products.
Last month, the FDA said it is "working with the National Association of Convenience Stores and the National Smoke Shop Association to increase awareness" that Diamond Shruumz had recalled all of their products.
Manufacturers urge consumers to stop eating
CDC says many popular edibles containing cannabis or mushroom extracts are becoming increasingly popular and easy to access and they are often sold in the garb of gummy, chocolate, or other snacks. Most of these products, the CDC says, contain ingredients that are generally not listed on product labels, like illicit substances which are not approved for use in food.
CBS News says Diamond Shruumz has blamed toxic levels of muscimol - a chemical derived from mushrooms, as a potential culprit behind the hospitalizations.
